Different objects look different from each other according to the material they are made from. The appearance depends on color, hardness, texture, and lustre. Metals are lustrous due to free electrons on their surfaces. Hence materials made of metals have lustre.
The material which does not allow light to pass through it is called opaque and material that allows light to pass through it is called transparent. The material through which light can pass partially is called translucent, e.g. butter paper.
