Explanation
The ambitious Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project, which proposes to link the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar between India and Sri Lanka by creating a shipping canal. With a depth of less than 10 meters across most of its extent, the sea is not sufficient for the movement of ships. This is due to the presence of the shallow region of Adam’s bridge, located southeast of Rameswaram near Pamban, that joined Sri Lanka to the continent of Asia during the last ice age.
Dryland communities have also developed deep knowledge of water and its elements. From the name of a particular system,(eg. a nadi) people knew how the water is collected, catchment prepared, embankment constructed, etc. Diverse systems to suit local ecology, geology, climate: nadi, talab, johad, bandha, etc. So many kinds of wells: Dugwells: kua owned by individuals; kohars community wells. Step wells: Baolis for drinking; constructed for philanthropic purposes; jhalaras not used for drinking.
