Density of population is defined as the number of persons per sq.km. The population density of India in 2011 was 382 per sq.km. Bihar with 1,106 population persons per sq.km is most thickly populated state followed by West Bengal (1,028) and Kerala (860).
Due to persecution of Zoroastrians in other countries and the liberal atmosphere and patronization of India, today the largest population of Zoroastrians resides in India mostly in Maharashtra and then Gujarat. The Zoroastrian groups are regarded as either Parsi or Irani depending on the time of migration to India.

India tops chart in adding more people every year to its Population. Poverty, illiteracy and high fertility rate are some of the reasons for rapid growth in Population of India. The steps taken by Government of India to control Population have little success but there is a long way to go.
The first census was conducted in India in 1872, but regular census started in 1881. A systematic and modern population census, in its present form was conducted non- synchronously between 1865 and 1872 in different parts of the country. This effort culminating in 1872 has been popularly labeled as the first population census of India However, the first synchronous census in India was held in 1881. Since then, censuses have been undertaken uninterruptedly once every ten year.
According to Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation 2011Three states have population more than 10 crore. Twenty states and one union territory (Delhi) have a population of over ten million.
National Population Policy of India was formulated in the year 2000 with the long term objective of achieving a stable population by 2045, at a level consistent with the requirements of sustainable economic growth, social development, and environmental protection.
With a growth rate of 9.42%, Maharashtra is second most populous state of India with 112,374,333 people. The rural population is about 61,545,441 i.e. (54.77%) and the urban population is 50,827,531 i.e. (45.23%).The sex ratio is 946.
Post 1949, it has been conducted by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. All the censuses since 1951 were conducted under the 1948 Census of India Act. The last census was held in 2011, whilst the next will be held in 2021.
So total seven census were conducted.
