Explanation
To give a positive Haloform or Iodoform test a molecule must have at least two carbon atoms. These must be the first two carbons in a chain and carbon number two must have an oxygen atom attached. Methanol (CH3OH) fails to meet this.
Presence of 1% ethyl alcohol acts as a negative catalyst for the oxidation of chloroform. The function of negative catalyst is to remove the active intermediate from the reaction i.e., to terminate the reaction chain.
