Explanation
Modern synthetic detergents are alkyl or aryl sulphonates produced from petroleum (or coal) and sulphuric acid. They can be defined as the sodium or potassium salt of a long chain alkyl benzene sulphonic acid or the sodium or potassium salt of a long chain alkyl hydrogen sulphate, that has cleansing properties in water. They are used in washing powders in a proportion of about $$15-30\%$$.
Soap is the sodium salt of a fatty acid and is partially soluble in water. When soap dissolves, it ionises into sodium ion and fatty acid ions.
When we add salt which is sodium chloride, it gets ionised in water and the sodium ions causes the sodium ions of soap to combine with the fatty acid ions and separate as precipitate of solid soap.
This helps in complete removal of soap from the reaction mixture. The precipitation of soap is through common ion effect.
