Any material or substances which can be obtained from the forestry minerals and used for direct utilization or commercial use is known as forest products. Trees are harvested in a wide range that can be used in our daily life. 
1. Solid timber products are used for making joinery, furniture, kitchen cupboards, and wall panels. 
2. Wood fiber products are used to make paper, cardboard, and particle board. 
3. Peeling a log produces the coating that may be glued together to make plywood, or laminated veneer lumber (LVL), used in building homes and offices, boats, toys, furniture, and joinery. 
4. Lots of medicines can be obtained from the forest.
5. Food is also obtained from the forest.


Do you hear the sounds of birds every day? Show how?

Yes, I often hear the sounds of birds such as the cooing noise of pigeons, koo-koo of a cuckoo, the chirping of sparrows, and the cawing of a crow.

Trees that are found in forests are oak, pine, sal, shisham, teak, amla, sandalwood, palas, khejri, etc.


If someone grew lots of trees close to each other, would this become a forest?

No, if someone grows lots of trees to each other, this would not necessarily become a forest because this can be in a park of garden.


How are damages caused to forest?

There are many ways in which damage is caused to forest. Some of them are listed below:
  • Forest trees are cut down to obtain wood for use in buildings, furniture, paper, and sports goods.
  • Forest department allows cutting down because it is good source of revenue for them
  • Developmental projects like building roads through forest area and construction of dams.
  • Incoming of tourists to forest, building rest houses and dumping of waste materials in the forest.


Explain the importance of wildlife

The animals that live in the wild without human interference are collectively called wildlife. Wildlife includes the herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores that format part of the food chain. Thus they are essential for maintaining the ecological balance. 


"A bunch of seedlings were seen sprouting on a heap of animal dropping in a forest." How do you think is the seedling benefited from the animal dung? 

Moisture present in the animal dung provides nutrient to the seeds that leads them to germinate or sprout.


All the needs of animals living in a forest are fulfilled and they do not suffer. Justify this statement in a few sentences. 

Animals don't suffer in forest because of the following reasons:
i) Plants consume carbon dioxide and give out oxygen to the animals for respiration.
ii) Plant eating animals (herbivores) depend on plants and trees and the animals eating flesh (carnivores) eat some herbivores.
iii) Big trees or trees are a shelter to many forest animals like monkey, snake, birds, etc.

Forests not only give us wood but also materials like latex, oils, spices, turpentine, etc. 


What is the importance of forest as a resource? 

Forests are renewable resources which provide the following benefits -
a) Habitat, food, protection to wildlife.
b) Help in balancing $$CO_2$$ and $$O_2$$ of atmosphere.
c) Improves water holding capacity of the soil.
d) Regulates the water cycle.
e) For human beings, they are the source of all essential commodities like fuelwood, timber pulp, and paper, etc.
f) Useful products like fruits, resins, gums, essential oils, bidi wrapper, etc.


Two friends shared their experiences of their vacation trip to two different forests. Do you think they would have seen the same type of plants and animals during their respective trips? Give reason. 

Every forest has different type of climatic conditions because of which there are various plants and animals in every forest. Two different forests would not have same type of plants and animals because of their different climatic conditions.
