But there was something else we really wanted to do. We took the cake, eatables, and gifts for the children living in the orphanage. We had taken prior permission from the authorities who run the orphanage. The orphanage had provided us with a room to celebrate my birthday. The children were waiting for us when we reached the orphanage. As I cut the cake, the children clapped and sang ‘Happy Birthday To You’. My joy was unbound when I celebrated my birthday with the children. They were so happy! They had made up cards for me. It was the best birthday I'd ever celebrated. It was only last week that we visited the zoological park in Gangtok as part of a school field trip. I looked out for a branch of wood to which she could attach herself onto but there was no sign of any either. I started shouting for help to see if anyone could come to the rescue.

After a couple of minutes, a group of woodcutters passing by heard me and came running.

Two of them knew how to swim and jumped into the stream to save her.

The force of the water was so intense that it was throwing them off course. The other two wood cutters took some of the branches and tied it up with string to save all three of them now

In the meantime, the young girl had managed to grab onto a branch that was sticking out of the water.

They connected the branches together and threw it towards the girl. She held onto it and they managed to pull her out.

The other two woodcutters were now still trying to swim ashore. The branch was stretched out to them as well and one of them quickly grabbed onto it and helped pull the other to it.

They were then brought out of the water safely. The young girl was so grateful that she offered the woodcutters and Kate to come over for lunch someday to repay them.

The 'Environment Club' of Sun Public School celebrated 'Environment Day' on $$5th$$ November in the school premises. The programme was inaugurated by the Mr Karuppasamy, the eminent environment list and presided by our principal. The function began with a special vandana prepared by the school choir group.

Many cultural programmes were prepared by the Cultural Group of the school that include a very interesting play on the theme 'Mother Earth' which was highly applauded by all. An essay writing and poster making competition also took place. After distributing the prizes, the chief Guest gave a speech in which the highlighted the need of conservation. Finally, the day was concluded after a tree plantation drive. The day was a huge success.

There was a village on the outskirts of forest. A shepherd boy used to take his herd of sheep across the fields to the lawns near the forest.

They were not all that bad to touch and this was the start of a new beginning, where instantly my perception and fear of reptiles went away and I was able to face my fears.

I figured out the park and rushed instantly. On reaching there I saw the mother's that were in my dream and the little toddlers.

The one that was going to get kidnapped was also there playing wearing the same outfit that I saw in my dream. I went and alarmed the mother that there was a kidnapper amongst them. They quickly picked up their kids.

I noticed the intruder and pointed her out to everyone and she immediately started running away.

Hopefully she will never visit this park again as she has been identified. This is how I averted a terrible situation.

This is a remarkable incident to see an animal save a life.

I was always a topper in class and my family and friends were so proud of me. For years I would place first in my class until one day a new student from a different city named Pratibha came in and stole the show.

Continuation: Child labor occurs in countries that have a lot of poverty and unemployment. When the families won’t have enough earning, they put the children of the family to work so they can have enough money to survive. Similarly, if the adults of the family are unemployed, the younger ones have to work in their place.

The uneducated only care about a short term result which is why they put children to work so they can survive their present

Most of these industries try to save money by hiring these children so that they can make them do the same amount of work for less money.

It is so disheartening to see how approximately 50% of the children in India suffer from malnourishment.

Which means that they are not getting adequate food to eat and the basic nutrients that are required in every growing kid.

Conclusion: The situation is getting from bad to worse, where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. We as a community must see to it that these children are looked after. The next few days were spent in rigorous practice. I practiced while eating food, during my study hours and even before going to bed. Finally the day arrived when I had to perform. My parents wished me luck and I was all set to speak on my side of the topic.

Honestly, I was nervous at first but as I spoke I became more confident. The debate went smoothly and I gave insightful points which the judges appreciated. Within an hour of the debate, the results were announced and my name was called out for the first prize. This was the best day of my life.

The ceilings in most of the rooms were down to the floor, except the one room which shone brightly. I walked towards it to see what was going on there. It was a tiny room with a lot of books. I thought it must have been a professor's study room. I looked around and saw nothing but dust and cobwebs.

The books were all about Ventriloquism, and about how to master the art of illusion. It intrigued me as I hadn't seen a ventriloquist in my life. As I looked around the room I found a shiny knob on the floor. I opened it and it led me to a basement of some sorts. Luckily it had a staircase leading downstairs. I climbed down and lo and behold I saw an ugly male doll sitting there. I went closer to take a look. It was Slappy the dummy.

I went to pick it up to try and see whether it had some battery or some strings attached to it that I could try pretending it could talk. The doll turned around and said "Hello Adharav, I was waiting to see you". This scared the living daylights out of me that I threw it away and began to run. away. "Run, run as fast as you can'', cried the doll. I scrambled around to look for the staircase but in vain. The room was so dark that I could hardly see a thing. I grabbed a chair that was in my way and flung it behind me. Luckily it smacked Slappy right in the face. "You will pay for this!", he cried. I was beginning to see my doom. I wanted to be free, be away from this evil creature. I ran as fast as I could and found the staircase. It led me back into the library. I paced past all the books and could hear Slappy yelling at the back

There was no door to this creepy library. I couldn't find a way back from which I entered. In the distance I saw the haggered, skinny old man with drooping shoulders come towards me with a saw in his hand. "These are my friends. And have you met my new bodyguard? He's not too bright, but he'll do anything I say, won't you, Rocky?", yelled Slappy.

Fear paralyzed me. I didn't know what to do and there were these 2 creatures who I never met in my life. Everywhere I looked I saw Slappy. "Don't you get it? I'm invincible", he roared with laughter. "Just let me go home and I promise I won't say anything to anyone", I said. Slappy screamed in pearls of laughter. I hurriedly raced towards the old man who looked as though he would collapse at any time. I grabbed the axe from his feeble hands and shoved it into Slappy's head. The dummy was dead there and then. I was so glad. Soon the parts of the building began to disappear. "What was this creepy place?", I wondered to myself?I quickly ran to my scooter and started it in a hurry. I saw the building as well as that caretaker fade away like dust in the air. I was so glad to be out of it.

It was late at night that I was returning home from work. For the past few days I had been working overtime which was the cause of me returning late. While I was normally cruising down a block playing my favourite music, the radio suddenly began to cause static. The music stopped and within a few minutes my car engine stopped too. I was now in the middle of an unknown location. My gas tank seemed alright. I got out of the car to see what was wrong with my engine when I spotted a female figure in the distance. I couldn't see her face as it all seemed dark.

So I went over to approach her if she could help me out in fixing my car. As I walked towards her, I heard a sharp growl. From behind her came a nasty looking dog who was showing his huge teeth at me. In fear for my life I took off as her dog pounced towards me to attack me. Few blocks away I found a thick bush where I hid. I waited there for 5 minutes until there was no sign of the dog. Then I slowly got out and started walking back in apprehension. Luckily the road seemed bare. It was eerie without a soul in sight.

I walked up to my car which I could see in a distance but the woman was nowhere in sight. She suddenly disappeared. All this was too scary for me. All of a sudden I noticed my car turning around and driving towards me. The only thing was that there was no one in the car! As the car reached me, the doors opened inviting me to enter. I didn't know what was happening but I just entered and drove home.

On my way to school I see my neighbours' house which is under construction. The builders work hard from early in the morning constructing a new balcony for them. Their house is red and white in colour and looks pretty neat. They have a beautiful garden filled with roses and Jasmines which complement their house. The owner of the house is a baker, so one usually gets the aroma of desserts while passing their house.

Soon after their house, there is a small children's park. Toddlers under 3 are usually seen here along with their mothers or nannies. As the school bell rang the new kid in class came to us and asked us to come over to his house for a party. Computers are known to facilitate faster communication. They have become a store house of information and a source of education over the years. However, it is a double-edged sword. One needs to ensure that they use this technology carefully so as to prevent any kind of harm caused to others.

America, the land of plenty, has always experienced an abundance of resources, but has this tradition of excess become our downfall? Its easy to see that people in the United States are getting larger. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years (CDC, 2013, Childhood Obesity Facts). According to the CDC (2013), as many as 18% of young people can be considered obese which puts them at risk for any number of health problems. Diabetes, joint and bone problems, and heart disease or stroke are just some of
the health problems affecting the nations young people. 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CDC, 2013, Health Effects of Childhood Obesity). Who, or what, is to blame? It is difficult to assign the blame on one source, because the problem isn't just one issue. There are many factors at play: abundantly available food, increased dependence on motorized vehicles, hugely popular video games, and even higher crime rates. Cars have become a way of life. People used to walk many places parents walked to work, shoppers walked to the grocery store, and kids used to walk to school. Increasing crime rates and the relocation of many schools out of the local neighborhoods have made people reluctant to send their children out unescorted. With all these different contributing factors, why is the government focusing on so called junk food as the best place to do battle with
this out of control epidemic? Can the state tax people healthy?
The majority of people in the U.S. have ready access to food; it just isnt always the healthiest food. In fact, cheaper fare is generally higher in fat, salt, and calorie content than more expensive foodstuffs. It only stands to reason that if junk food is cheap, then people with lower income will buy it. This seems to be backed up by statistics. Education level is an indicator of economic level as well; those who didnt graduate from high school often make significantly less money than those who did graduate. High school graduation also impacts obesity levels; there is a marked difference between graduates and non-graduates. People with less than a high school degree have the highest obesity rate (32.9%) . . . [while] College graduates have the lowest obesity rate of 20.8% (Insider Monkey, 2010, para. 7). The logical reasoning could follow that since those without high school diplomas statistically make less money, that they would buy cheaper food. And if their obesity rates are also higher, then it could be that the cheap food is making them fat. But does it stand to reason that making that cheap food more expensive would make people with limited income change their shopping habits? Some people who are in favor of taxing junk food are also often in favor of subsidizing healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. By providing growers with
a portion of their income, the government could help these healthy foods to cost less. This actually seems to be more reasonable. If a person is on a limited income and is looking for a bargain, it makes sense to lower costs instead of raising them. A study in New Zealand found that decreasing the price of fruits and vegetables by 10% increased consumption 2% to 8% (Scott-Thomas, 2012, para. 5). Perhaps America, too, should look at making healthy food easier to obtain rather than raising prices for poorer people.

(ii) In the paragraphs above from the story the verbs are in the present tense (e.g. hold, goes, etc.). This gives the reader an impression of immediacy. In the book, he read the Marathas' morale was very high because their leader, Vishwasrao successfully pierced the enemy defense line without being hit by the so many bullets that were fired at him. Not only the Marthas had defeated the troops of Abdali, but they had also kept the British at bay. They had successfully established their kingdom in North India and through political acumen steered India to a state of prosperity and power. After leaving the library he went to a guest house and took a light meal. He also found history to be changed in which India had never ever become a slave to the British. He also found that Marathas had defeated the troops of Abdali at Panipat. During the time he was in a coma, his consciousness experienced an experience of British India in which he always wanted to see; but that India had never existed in reality; it existed in Gaitonde's mind only.

He takes a vow to get him married, and that to a young girl of 11 by the name of Ratna, Rama Rao's niece, who has of late come to Hosahalli to stay for a few days.
Now the narrator plans to make the prospective bride and the bridegroom meet each other. So he does this by asking Rao's wife to send Ratna to his house to fetch buttermilk. As Ratna arrives she is asked to sing. As planned at that very moment Ranga arrives and gets mesmerized by Ratna's singing and almost instantly falls in love with her being oblivious of his theories regarding child marriage. The narrator, from his experience, notices this quite well but purposely disappoints Ranga by saying that Ratna is married.
The next morning the narrator meticulously plots with Shastri, the fortune teller, to trap Ranga and have him marry Ratna. He tutors him in what is to be said and done when he will bring the boy to him.
The narrator finds Ranga miserable that day. The latter complains of headaches and the narrator suggests that they visit Shastri. Thereupon Ranga is taken to Shastri who cleverly reacts by saying that their visit has been a surprise. The narrator acts foolishly forgetting what he is supposed to say but Shastri cleverly manages the scene.
Everything goes well as per the plan. Shyama, the narrator, asks Shastri what might be worrying about the boy. Shastri calculates throwing his cowries and suggests that it is about a girl. On further calculation, he suggests that the girl's name has a connection with something found in the ocean. The narrator asks if it could be 'Kamala'. Then he suggests 'Pachchi', meaning moss. When Shastri hints at' pearl' or 'Ratna', the narrator becomes jubilant and Ranga is amazed. Shyama further asks if there is any chance of negotiation of the marriage bearing any fruit, to which Shastri answered affirmatively. But once again the narrator pours water on Ranga's hopes by saying that Ratna is married.
However, on the way, the narrator enters Rama Rao's house and comes out of the house to inform Ranga that Ratna is unmarried and the previous information about her marriage was wrong. Now visibly Ranga's joys have no limits. When the narrator asks him whether whatever the astrologer told is right, he admits that it is true and further adds that there is more truth in astrology than he thought.
Later the narrator informs Shastri about the success story and makes a sarcastic comment about astrology. But Shastri is not ready to accept. He says that the former gave only the hints and whatever he said was the result of his calculation.
Whatever the case might be, Ranga finally gets married to Ratna and fathers two children, moreover, Ratna is now eight months pregnant. The narrator is invited to the third birth anniversary of Ranga's child, who was named after the narrator as 'Shyama'. On finding this, the narrator mildly chides Ranga saying that he knows that it is the English custom to name the child after someone one likes, but it is not fair to name him 'Shyama' because he is fair complexioned.
All said and done, it is interesting to find how Ranga forgets what he learned about happy marriages in cities and gives in to the far deeper influences the village customs and traditions have on him.

The characters are Robert Baldwin, Martha, John, Evie, Mr. Marshall, and a maid. The scene is set at Baldwin's cottage and it is Sunday afternoon. Robert Baldwin has gone outside. His wife and children are anxiously waiting for his arrival.

       The sky is so dark. The family is expecting that it will rain and they don't know whether Baldwin would take his umbrella or not. While the family is waiting for Robert Baldwin's arrival, they are talking themselves about John Gresham on whose bank Mr. Baldwin worked. Now due to the financial crisis, the bank was closed and John Gresham is found guilty for that and is in jail. From their talk, it is evident that John Gresham's trial is on the next day, and John Baldwin is giving evidence against him. But John Gresham calls him that day. They are very anxiously to know why he calls Baldwin.

       Evie has a doubt whether Baldwin has involved in “wrecking of the bank” because every newspaper is mentioning that, and Baldwin does not say anything against it. Martha tells that the newspaper is unfair to him. Since Baldwin is working under Gresham's orders, the family has a doubt whether he involved in the bank crash.

       But Martha firmly believes that Baldwin never did anything at all. He found out about the bank crash by accident. John immediately says that he saw Donovan, the assistant cashier the last day at the Athletic Club. Donovan was working there for eight years. The news came “like a bolt out of a clear sky”. John has a suspicion that his father must have known about it because he is “the only witness against John Gresham”. Since he was named after John Gresham, John feels that because of John Gresham his name is damaged. Even he mentions that John Gresham has acquired a lot of wealth in these twenty years while his father is getting just sixty dollars a week. Martha tells that her husband is very dedicated to his work. Whatever John Gresham asked him to do without revolting he obeyed.

       Finally, Robert Baldwin comes into the house. Everyone wants to how the crash happened in the bank. He tells that even he knows what John Gresham is doing only one day before the crash. It is under his pressure that John Gresham closed the bank. He even tells them why John Gresham asked him to meet. John Gresham wants him to tell, “I don't remember”, when the court asks anything about the bank crash to Robert Baldwin. If Robert Baldwin does this, he will get a hundred thousand dollars. But Robert Baldwin is an honest man. So he does not accept his proposal.

       But when the whole family hears about the money, their mind begins to change. They begin to convince John Gresham. Martha wants to know whether the depositors would lose any money. Robert Baldwin replies that no one will lose anything. Thus the family comes to know that the money is safe. John Gresham's crime was that he misappropriated the funds.

        The family begins to persuade Robert Baldwin to say lie and to help John Gresham. At first, Robert Baldwin is shocked. Martha tells him that since they named their son's name after John Gresham, it will be a disgrace to their son. Also, it was John Gresham who sponsored John’s baptizing. With these words, she forces Robert Baldwin to help John Gresham.

         According to Evie, if John Gresham tells the depositors that he will pay everything back the next day, they will hate Robert Baldwin for sending John Gresham to jail. John supports her by saying, “Nobody wants to see him punished”. He also feels that if John Gresham does not go to jail, he will start a business where Robert can become his partner. This makes Robert Balwin get angry.

        Martha tries to convince Robert Balwin by saying that now John is the sole breadwinner of the family. But his income is not sufficient for the family to survive. If Robert accepts a hundred thousand dollars from John Gresham, the family can lead a cozy life.

         Robert Baldwin never thinks that his family will change after hearing the amount which John Gresham will pay if Robert Baldwin says, “I don’t remember” in the court. It makes him sad. He calls them “Shams”, “Liars”, “Hypocrites” and “Thieves”. Still, the family persuades him to accept the money. By this time, Mr. Marshall, the President of the Third National, arrives in the home. He gives a piece of happy news to Robert Baldwin and his family by telling them that a good position is awaiting Robert Baldwin in the Third National. He hears from John Gresham that Robert Baldwin has refused to tell lie in the court which prompted John Gresham to confess. Mr. Marshall is impressed by his honesty.
