Wittig reaction is a reaction of an aldehyde or ketone with a triphenyl phosphonium ylide (Wittig reagent) to give an alkene and triphenylphosphine oxide.Alkyl halide is used to form Wittig reagent, here alkyl group should be methyl or an unhindered primary alkyl group.Secondary alkyl halides forms poor product. Tertiary alkyl groups cannot form the ylide. Also, in halide compound, halide must be replaceable as leaving group. Wittig reaction:
