Ashoka adopted Buddhism after Kalinga war. He began to implement Buddhist principles in the administration of his kingdom and named the new code of conduct Dhamma. For the first time, Buddhism was propagated outside India in Sri Lanka. His missions were headed by his son Mahindra, who travelled to Sri Lanka along with four other monks and a novice.

Ajatshatru started as a follower of Jainism but later on he changed his loyalty from Jainism to Buddhism. Ajatshatru is said to have gone to Buddha and confessed his fault of killing his father and promised not to indulge in such a heinous crime again and also begged for consolation. This visit of Ajatshatru to Buddha is commemorated in one of the sculptures of Bharhut. Ajatshatru also patronized the first Buddhist Council at Rajagriha in about 487 B.C.
